Landscapes of Iraq

Landscapes of Iraq

It is the cradle of humanity, an ancient land steeped in history. Great civilization made their mark upon its harsh environment. And modern warfare rages in its shifting sands and sun-scorched dunes where the ageless Euphrates roll.

It is easy to sometimes forget that amid the bleak desert setting that life not only survives, but thrives. The following photographs are mere glimpses of a beautiful and tragic Iraq.

Spring arrived early in the desert. All over the place were tufts of yellow wildflowers growing in the sand.

It was a surreal sight. The bright yellow flowers were blooming everywhere; berms, wahhdis, and holes in the ground. It was once an empty wasteland, but now dotted with life.

The lazy Euphrates evoked a sense of serenity.
